Excellent point: "...triumph of quantity over quality, of consumption over meaning, form over substance." Sad but true. I see much the same here in Canada as we're just as much hitched to that global shopping cart.

You know Neil, after I wrote that piece and sent it winging off into the void, I thought about how this ensemble of changes have acted like a strange attractor, like the proverbial rolling snowball on the hillside growing larger with foot of descent. I thought I, even with my detachment and criticism, had proved vulnerable and even added to the unstoppable growth. But critics must not self censure, must not silence themselves for fear they aggrandize the detestable. If I saw a gargantuan toxic fungus suddenly erupting in Central Park to a height of one hundred feet and then engulfing the parkgoers in mere moments.. I would certainly call attention to it and regrettably attract gawkers who themselves would be quickly engulfed. Not a good outcome but by sounding the alarm I might have saved far more people...than lost.

I hear the average football TV only has like 18 min of actual football and the rest is ads. It blows my mind that sports have not found a way to be ad free. All of our streaming services are ad free now. Maybe it really never was about the actual sports?
