I love the desert and for many reasons.

Have you ever seen our Galaxy? Its splendid dustiness and color! To do so requires isolation, darkness and clear air. My state has plenty of both in its southeast corner, maybe the biggest such area in the lower forty-eight.
Modern civilization, spreading like a metastasizing cancer, is shrinking such areas. And as the skies increasingly carry water vapor and as the heavens fill up with satellites and space clutter, our grandchildren may only experience the views we still can obtain today, as through a fogged glass. What a huge loss- comparable to being expelled from Eden.
That image on the link you provided to the Oregon Outback Dark Sky Network (ODSN) is incredible.
"Modern civilization, spreading like a metastasizing cancer". Yes! I often think the sprawl looks like a micro chip.
