Things have changed quite a bit since I was last here. The place is still a desert. There seems to be no life anywhere and I've walked all over. The heat is scorching but the nights are bitterly cold; I guess that's because there's no water vapor left in the upper atmosphere- might as well be on Mars. A few weeks ago I looked up and that orange speck was green. Go figure.
A month or so again I was approached by a floating rectangular plate that politely inquired what my purpose was there. We chatted and I found out it was an artificial intelligence of some kind and that beside myself, was the only sentient being currently on the planet. I told it that I was just a tourist with a sentimental attachment to the place. It replied that it shared the sentiment and we parted company.
A lonely and desolate world in this era, but once a home to many of us.
The spell of sentimentality is hard to break and sometimes nice to indulge.
